Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has recently become very popular in the UK through the introduction of the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) onto mainstream television.
MMA is a combination of various mixed martial arts but is also a very refined and often underappreciated art in itself.
The modern MMA student will typically train in a range of different martial arts including;
- Thai Boxing
- Brazilian Jiujitsu
- Wrestling
- Boxing
Others might include;
- Sambo
- Judo
- Luta livre
These are the martial arts that are proven to be the most effective in modern MMA competition.
MMA combines striking and grappling arts, bringing them together and using them to their best potential under the rules of MMA. This newly developed sport has turned into the fastest growing sport not only in the UK but also the rest of the world!

Fightworx Academy have an active competition team from amateur to professional level fighters.
The main MMA instructors at Fightworx academy are Simon Philips and Kris Barras, both of which are active professional MMA fighters.
Due to the complexity of the sport of MMA, the classes are designed to show students how to bring their striking and grappling abilities together and how to use them effectively in MMA.
We strongly advise that anyone interested in training MMA should attend other classes first so that they can develop some of the basic skills required in the different striking and grappling arts before jumping straight into MMA.
All of the Fightworx Academy MMA fight team not only train in the MMA classes, they also train separately in each discipline so they can focus on developing that specific area.
This is exactly how some of the top fighters in the world train, fighters such as; George st Pierre, Anderson Silva, Dan Hardy, Michael Bisping. All these fighters train extensively in Thai boxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiujitsu and boxing.
Although MMA is a very popular sport, not everyone wishes to train to compete in it. A lot of students at Fightworx train to develop their fitness, self confidence and self defence ability.
Classes involve a lot of physical contact and controlled sparring. This is the best and only way to actually test your techniques and improve your fighting ability.
